FAQs
Is it safe to drink from stainless steel mugs?
Yes! When it comes to non-toxic metals, stainless steel is right there at the top. Stainless steel is durable, doesn’t leach chemicals, and is great for boiling-temperature liquids without damaging the material or leaching.
What is the best material for a travel mug?
Hands down if you’re looking for the best material for your travel mug you're going to want stainless steel. Stainless steel offers higher durability, better insulation, are easy to clean and the option for vacuum-sealed options for extended temperature control.
Other materials often used for travel mugs are aluminum and plastic and while these have their own set of pros and cons (including leaching, tasting funny and lower durability) we still recommend stainless steel as the #1 material.
Which travel mug stays hot longest?
When it comes to maintaining the temperature of your beverage, the first specs to review are materials used and type of insulation.
As mentioned above, we are big fans of stainless steel as a material for your customized travel mugs. The purpose of insulation is to reduce the traveling of heat (or cold!) from your beverage to outside of the cup.
Here are some types of insulation listed from shortest to highest temperature retention:
- Air/Nothing at all - This provides a gap between the inner and outer walls to help reduce heat loss.
- Foam Insulation - Instead of air between the inner and outer cup, there is a layer of foam.
- Vacuum insulation - When there is a vacuum between the inner and outer walls. This airless space helps to eliminate temperature change.
- Copper vacuum - The best option when it comes to insulated travel mugs, the combination of a vacuum created airless space paird with inner copper plated walls and stainless steel outer walls gives this combination a significant boost in temperature retention.
Our mugs from Good to Best
Good Insulated Mugs: Polar Camel Drinkware - Offers some pretty good insulation. Double-wall vacuum insulation is able to out-perform other brands while the slide-lock lids provide adequate
assistance in heat retention.
Better Insulated Mugs: Contigo Drinkware - With double wall vacuum insulation we see Contigo as a close competitor to the Polar Camel. However the inclusion of sealed lids pushes the Contigo ahead with superior insulation on all sides.
Best Insulated Mugs: Stanley and Thermos brands are our top performers when it comes to insulated travel mugs. Double-wall vacuum insulation is a must with the leak-proof lids sealing the deal for the best insulation from top to bottom.
How to clean a stainless steel travel mug?
First step is to check if your stainless steel travel mug is dishwasher safe. If not, then the best route is to add one to two tablespoons of baking soda and a generous amount of vinegar to the travel mug.
Wait until the reaction settles down before replacing the lid.
Once the lid has been replaced, it’s time to agitate. Holding the lid in place, agitate your insulated travel mug by swirling, turning, and gently shaking to ensure all of the baking soda mixture reaches every part of the inner mug.
When done, simply dump the mixture out, rinse with tap water and either wipe dry or let air dry.
If your mug needs more work, using a dish scrubber and dish soap should get any persistent stains out.
