How to Make Multi-Layer Stencils for Spray Paint

If you’ve ever tried to spray paint a design with multiple colors, you know it’s not something that can be done with just one stencil. That’s where multi-layer stencils come in.

With a custom stencil set, each color in your design gets its own layer. For example, a logo with black and red would be split into two stencils—one for each color. When used in the right order, the layers come together to create a clean and accurate result. We recommended a maximum of 3-4 colors for ease of application

Stencil Troubleshooting Tips

Troubleshooting Tips for Multi-Colored Stencil Designs

1. Misaligned Layers

Colors don’t line up correctly between layers.

  • Use registration marks to align layers precisely.
  • Tape stencil securely before spraying.
  • Start with light tack adhesive spray for better placement.

2. Paint Bleed or Fuzzy Edges

Paint leaks under the stencil or edges look soft.

  • Use painter’s tape to seal stencil edges.
  • Apply paint in light coats rather than heavy sprays.
  • Hold can at the correct distance.

3. Overlapping or Unwanted Color Mixing

One color bleeds into another or overlaps too much.

  • Allow each layer to dry completely before applying the next color.
  • Mask off surrounding areas when spraying.
  • Start with lighter colors first.
