SELLING AMONG WOLVES - Without Joining The Pack!
I once had the opportunity to spend some time with the former president of a Central American country. He had led a successful coup to overthrow the existing government, but was now in power by force. He recognized that any agreement that was not voluntary stood a great chance of flying apart, so he quickly called upon a much loved leader of the people, someone who had the loyalty of the majority, to become the new president. The Apostle Paul recognized the importance of voluntary cooperation and in his negotiations with Philemon for the safe return of Onesimus, he AFFIRMED HIS REPSECT FOR HIM when he stated, "…But WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT I wanted to do nothing…" In your negotiations, you need to create a climate of cooperation, not force or intimidation. Look for ways to stimulate cooperation. Consider concessions you can make that demonstrate good will and open the door for a successful outcome. Paul also says to Philemon, "…that YOUR GOOD DEED might not be by compulsion, as it were, but voluntary." In this short statement, Paul CREATES AN EXPECTATION OF A SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION, by referring to Philemon's good deed which he has not even agreed to perform. In your negotiations, plant the seed that you expect to come to a positive agreement, and then nurture that notion throughout the entire negotiating process. Contributed by: Do you have questions?
