SELLING AMONG WOLVES - Without Joining The Pack!
I remember a Canadian businessman I was trying to sell a copier to in 1978. When I walked into the lobby of his office, he walked past and said to his receptionist, "Get rid of him!" I politely declined his offer and walked over to where he was standing in the center of the office. I believe my boldness surprised him. It did me! When he looked me in the face, I was polite, kind, courteous and confident. He directed me to his controller who later made the purchase from me. My strategy was simple, minister in the opposite spirit. He was operating out of fear, but I was operating out of boldness that comes from the Lord. He was rude and intimidating, while I was polite and engaging. My confidence earned his respect, if not his envy. My kindness, in the face of his rudeness, captured a part of his heart and for a moment, he allowed me entrance into his business and life. From there, I simply out-served the competition and won the sale. Too often we try to be nicer than Jesus and when we get beaten in the marketplace, we blame it on the bad guys. We hide behind our religious platitudes as we make excuses, instead of learning from mistakes, engaging the culture and leading the market with a Christian world view that leads through service and knows no surrender but to Christ!
